SCOTT W. MITCHELL
Scott Mitchell has been a working professional artist in Rochester, NY since early 2000. His art experiences and education were nurtured from a small farming community in North Eastern Pennsylvania and refined by formal training.
Scott’s earliest inspirations came from his grandmother and father. His grandmother patiently taught him the actions, effects and results that watercolors can bring to any idea, while his father opened Scott’s eyes to all aspects of wood as an alternative material and its creative use. He found a personal bond with wood as a way to express his ideas and transfer his thoughts into a final three-dimensional piece, while the free flowing environment of watercolors engaged him and soon became a part of most paintings he created. Works and styles from fine artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat, Willem De Kooning and Mark Rothko, as well as digital designers such as Dave McKean, David Carson, and Barbara Kruger, also inspire him.
In 1996, Scott pursued his artistic-oriented goals when he moved to Rochester, NY. He attended the Rochester Institute of Technology where he majored in Graphic Design with a concentration in Psychology. Upon graduating in 2000 with a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts, he decided to continue his educational quest tailored back toward the world of fine art. In the fall of 2000, he began his Master’s of Fine Arts at Rochester Institute of Technology, majoring in sculpture and painting. After trying multiple techniques, materials and processes, he found his home back from where he began with watercolors and wood. His mode of inspiration was a combination of his experiences combined into one solid realization.
Scott has exhibited in several juried competitions, group shows and solo exhibitions. He is a member of Rochester Contemporary and was a Director and Curator of R.I.T.’s Gallery r as well as Director of Gallery blue. Scott also shares his knowledge and talent with students as an instructor at two colleges in the Rochester area. He resides in Webster, NY where he lives with his wife, son and daughter.
